Is Cuba Safe?

Is Cuba safe for tourists?  The answer is YES!  We have been to many parts of the world and must say we found Cuba to be one of the safest.  Cuba wants tourists so it is well known that you do not mess with tourists!  In Havana, there are police on almost every corner.   Although rare, street crime and pickpocketing are always a possibility, so you just need to be smart.  Don’t wear your jewels out to a club, don’t carry your phone or wallet in your back pocket, don’t buy jewelry or cigars from street vendors that approach you, they will be fakes!

You also should know that Cuba has no tolerance for tourists doing illegal activities.  For example, you will not want to try to bring illicit drugs (including marijuana),that is illegal.

As for taking photographs, most Cubans are happy to have their photo taken, as long as you are respectful of them.  The exception to this rule is the military.  You are not allowed to photograph any military personnel, military buildings, or even the police (unless they are taking part in a ceremony such as changing of the guard).  It is unlikely that you would get in serious trouble, you may just have to delete the pics.  If you are unsure if you can take someones photo, just ask!

So, to sum up the question, “is Havana safe for tourists”, the answer is YES, Havana is a surprisingly safe city!
